If you are looking for a highly-customizable system for modifying IKEA cabinets, Dunsmuir is a vendor you should look at using. From my experience they offer the most control and the widest variety of finishes and materials. We used a mix of Shinnoki Desert Oak paired with a matte black Fenix laminate. Overall we are very happy with the end result.Like some of the other reviews here, the process to get that result can be challenging. That said, we did have a couple of problems with the items delivered and Dunsmuir was quick to resolve the issue and their drawings were clear and easy to follow. If you are thinking of going this route, and are a DIYer, some Ikea components can be mixed to allow cabinet dimensions that are not available off the shelf.
We just completed our kitchen renovation and used Dunsmuir Cabinets to provide door and drawer fronts plus panels for our IKEA cabinet boxes. It was a great experience! Scott and Ann-Sofi were wonderful to work with. They were professional, patient and provided great help throughout the project to ensure that everything fit and worked together. The drawers, doors and panels are absolutely beautiful, the fit is great and the finish and colors are beyond our expectations. It all came together beautifully, and I cannot thank them enough. Highly recommend Dunsmuir!
We recently built a new house and ordered Dunsmuir Cabinets for several rooms (Kitchen, Laundry, Office, Entry Mud, Master Bathroom). We love them. We wanted high-quality, modern painted cabinets and struggled to find the right ones. Dunsmuir was incredibly helpful in making design choices (style, color and cabinet set-ups/options) and the installation went very smoothly. We found their team to be responsive, responsible and pro-active. This said, there are elements to this process that require customer input and thoughtful attention (reviewing specs, reviewing mockups). We did so and are thrilled with our experience. The cabinets look and function great.
TL;DR - 3.5/4 stars depending on your needs and expectations. Found Dunsmuir Cabinets after giving other usual suspects in Ikea fronts a try. We also explored Form Cabinets, but their lead times and prices were beyond reasonable. What set these guys apart was the ability to create very minimalistic fronts without visible handles. In the end, the kitchen looks ultra sleek and European (their Nordic heritage shines through, especially during the design phase). But the process was OK at best and the price was high. The good: they used the design we provided and improved on it. Their suggestions were solid and our architect agreed with pretty much all of them. Some added cost, but the end result is justifiable. The fronts are very high quality and if you don’t know they are installed on Ikea cabinets, you would easily think it’s a high-end, custom work. The bad: Unlike other services, they do NOT tell you what Ikea cabinets to order. In fact, it’s on you to keep tabs on all the changes they make and translate them to updates to your Ikea order. That was a royal pain in the butt, and delayed us by about a month as Ikea also sometimes has out of stock cabinets, especially they most used ones. We only discovered this during the installation, so that wasn’t a great experience at all. And if you don’t know much about Ikea kitchens (why would you?!) this made the problem much worse. Another thing to keep in mind is pricing. There’s no two ways about it - it’s high. Maybe not Form Kitchens high, but still it’s a lot. Expect to pay double of the Ikea cabinets cost. We also hated that shipping was a TBD and had to go back and forth until it was determined that their calculations were off. Mistakes happen, but this lack of transparency and the delta between what you pay and the initial quote was hard to swallow. The ugly: there were mistakes made in the production despite what the final and approved plan was. But since you sign your life away with the agreement, all we got were workaround suggestions. No offers of a refund - even though that also created massive headaches for our GC. Plus, they were changing manufacturers and waiting for them to make panels the right size would take another 8 weeks.Would I work with them again…? Maybe. It’s a mixed bag for sure.
I had an extremely positive experience with Dunsmuir. They take the time to create personalized plans, go over the details with you, and the finished product is really high quality. Were still installing our cabinets so Ill update with photos once installed, but the quality of the cabinet doors is incredible for the price and our order was accurate and timely. I dont agree with the other reviewer who said they were hard to work with or took a long time - any delay is typically resulting from the purchaser not giving final approval over the plans. Once approved, our cabinets were ready in three weeks and look like they cost 3 or 4x what we paid!
I was hoping we’d find a solution for our issues on a project, and that just didn’t happen. Ann Sofi is a great employee, but sadly Scott overshadows even her amazing work, and makes working with dunsmuir an absolute nightmare. Scott is rude, unprofessional, and just acts like everyone he encounters is an inconvenience to him. We had graining issues with our cabinets, and Scott lied and said their website clarifies that graining can only be matched to a certain height, which is not accurate. It was not listed anywhere on their website, and was not communicated with us. We also ended up noticing many places below that “certain height” also had graining issues, and we had the installer show us exactly where the pieces were marked and installed according to Dunsmuir’s drawings. We ended up replacing a large portion of the cabinet fronts from another vendor. The quality of the project is good, but the process is such a headache, and customer service is non existent.
Unless you have unlimited patience, time, and money, do not use Dunsmuir Cabinets! While the quality of the panels eventually delivered is good, Dunsmuir Cabinets makes what should be a simple task of ordering substitute doors and drawers for standard IKEA cabinets into a lengthy, costly, and very unpleasant ordeal! I am an experienced DIYer and recently used Dunsmuir Cabinets for the second time in the last few years. In both cases, my kitchen design was very simple as was my straightforward request for alternative (to IKEA) door and drawer panels. The first time, the experience was good and i got what i ordered. The second time, after working with Scott and their current processes and tools, i received doors and cover panels for cabinets that were never part of my design. When i called about my order, they accepted no responsibility but said they may have some leftover material and would pay for shipping if i wanted to order and pay for new doors. Next time Ill find another company that makes substitute IKEA parts or will deal with the panel manufacturer directly. Whatever you do, you can save yourself a lot of time, money, and hassle by avoiding Dunsmuir Cabinets
I run a medium sized residential architecture firm in California specializing in mid century modern, and modern homes. We have had several projects with Dunsmuir cabinets and there is an employee there named Scott Wolf who is an absolute nightmare to work with. If you want to get anything built, you have to work with Ann Sofi. Here is a quote from an insulting email from Scott we received, “Dominick, We received your drawings... The design is rather confused, ill-conceived at best, and parts are simply unbuildable. And it appears from the key that you require only a few pieces from Dunsmuir Cabinets. I am sorry, we are not interested.”So now our unbuildable kitchen is being built by someone else who is able to handle a simple design like ours.On another project, I spent over an hour marking up Dunsmuir shop drawings, Scott was so confused about it, he asked for a phone call. During the phone call, he refused to open the drawings, (how can we discuss the markups if he wont look at the drawings?), he was incredibly condescending, and flat out refused to get on Zoom because he had only a half hour. Remember, Scott was the one who scheduled the call.I was even more shocked when I said, “Scott, you have to open the drawings or I don’t know how we will be able to move forward on this project.” He screamed “ACTUALLY, NO I DON’T!” And he hung up the phone. I reached out to Anne Sofi and she was able to deliver the updated drawings in a calm and professional manner.Later I received one professional email from Ann Sofi with the updates, and a second condescending email from Scott, with the same updated drawings attached, that explained what I was allowed to comment on the drawings.I would absolutely not recommend working with this company, there are other companies out there who can do this work better.
